In one of the 2021 field season trips to the Greenland ice sheet, senior researcher Nanna Karlsson and three PROMICE colleagues journeyed to the innermost parts of the ice sheet. The task was to check and upgrade the northern group of GC Net weather stations, which were incorporated in PROMICE in 2020 after the USGS no longer had funding for the program.
“These stations are important for our ice and climate modelling services, and it’s important that someone keeps them running,” says Nanna Karlsson. After two field seasons more or less cancelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, some stations were in dire straits. Some were almost entirely buried under the snow and some had been shredded by the gale force winds. However, the team got most of them restored or replaced, and the valuable data will keep on flowing.
